Vocational training for disadvantaged young people

Y Care International has been supporting a vocational training centre for men and women in Jericho since 1994. The current project will run until 2010.

Vocational training project, Jericho

The project aims to empower 600 disadvantaged Palestinian young people living in the West Bank.

This project aims to provide pioneering and meaningful vocational training so that young people can increase their opportunities for employment and income generation. Many of the trainees come from impoverished families throughout the West Bank and many of them live in refugee camps.

How we are helping

This project is providing young women with access to non-traditional vocational training courses, such as graphic design and computer maintenance.  Most vocational training courses for women focus on traditional vocational training skills such as handicrafts and secretarial skills.

Young men are trained in woodwork, carpentry, electronics, building and car maintenance. Other support activities for both men and women include assertiveness sessions, career counselling and life skills courses. The students also take part in a seven month work placement. 85% of graduates from the centre obtain employment within a year of graduating.

What we hope to achieve

  • 600 young men and women completing relevant training courses
  • 600 young men and women understanding their rights
  • Regular updating of all courses in line with market surveys
  • A national vocational training curriculum used by all Palestinian vocational training institutes
