Madagascar

Despite its image as a tourist paradise, Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries with 74% of the population below the poverty line. Over 50% are under the age of 20 and many are unable to access education or healthcare. Despite a relatively low prevalence of HIV/AIDS compared to sub-Saharan Africa, high levels of sexually transmitted infections in the country could fuel an HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The island also faces environmental challenges, being heavily exposed to tropical cyclones which bring torrential rains and destructive floods, such as the ones in 2000 and 2004, which left thousands homeless.

Y Care International has been working in the country since 2006, through the YMCA of Madagascar.
