Togo Solidarity Day

The final Solidarity Day for the Youth Justice in Action campaign will be taking place in Lomé, the capital of Togo, on Thursday 10 December 2009. This also falls on Human Rights Day, the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As with each of the other Solidarity Days, young people from Togo will be making their voices heard by calling on the Government to make youth justice a reality.

Young people who are currently being held in Lomé civil prison will be talking about their situations and prison conditions to representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Human Rights and the President of the Human Rights Commission. The detainees will also be performing a play highlighting the problems they suffer in detention.

They will be asking the Government to:

  • Respect national and international laws on the treatment of young people by the criminal justice system
  • Speed up the judgement process so that young people spend less time in detention awaiting trial
  • Improve the conditions in Togo’s prisons
