Over the summer, a group of young people began coming up with ideas of how to raise the profile of Youth Justice in Action. As ideas began to flow, it was clear that art, music and creativity were the strong skills within the group.
With the support of their youth worker, the group began to plan for summer activities and were successful in receiving funding from Y Care International’s seed funding programme. They decided to focus on the ‘Twisting the Truth’ element of the campaign; how the media portrays young people. They involved other local youth groups by sending them an art pack containing art materials and a brief, which asked them to think about the issue and create a response through art which would then be displayed in an exhibition.
Art in the Park
On 17th July, the group arranged for two local artists to come and work with the group and other young people to create pieces of art. Due to the weather, the workshops took place inside rather than in the park, as they had planned.
The day went well, with a group of 15 young people from another youth project joining in the afternoon activities. This took the shape of creating canvases with pictures and headlines taken from newspapers and magazines to put across their message. The group hopes that their pieces will be shown at a local gallery. They also want to use the artwork, along with an interactive workshop, to tour around local schools.
