Child soldiers research report

9 January 2008

Y Care International has today published a research report into the rehabilitation of former child soldiers in Colombia.

Child soldiers

Denied a childhood and often subjected to horrific violence, an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 young people under the age of 18 are currently serving as soldiers in armed conflicts worldwide. An estimated 11,000 under 18s are thought to have served in Colombia's long-running civil war.

Drawing on its experience, Y Care International has carried out a research project into the rehabilitation and reintegration of former child soldiers in Colombia. Our partner, YMCA Bogotá, works to help former child soldiers deal with their past, gain an education and become part of society again. The report draws on the experiences of YMCA Bogotá, who are carrying out this work in the midst of an ongoing conflict. It details the lessons learned throughout the process and aims to inform similar work with former child soldiers in other countries.
