Niger emergency response

1 August 2005

Niger, one of the world’s least developed countries which has experienced decades of chronic poverty, was plunged into crisis in August 2005 with over 3 million people at risk of acute malnutrition.

Rain shortages and locust invasion severely affected agricultural production and grasslands reserved for cattle.

Y Care International launched an emergency appeal in August 2005 to enable our partner, ACT International, to deliver aid where it is needed most.

ACT members have been working in this part of Africa for many years and are well-placed to respond to the emergency.

They provided millet, seed, milk powder and animal fodder to the affected population – mainly for children, particularly the weak and the sick, but also for the elderly.

Appeal funds also supported plans to avert food crises in the future, through the construction and setting up of cereal banks and the support of cereal bank committees.
