Malusu's story

Like many young people in Liberia 25-year-old Malusu was deeply affected by the civil war, which claimed her father’s life. She is one of many young people Y Care International’s partner YMCA is supporting to use radio to overcome the trauma of their past and build peace.

Malusu recalls: “When the YMCA begun its youth radio programme in 2000, I took advantage of the programme, taking part in journalism workshops”. To begin with, she did anything she felt capable of, but with time and the encouragement of others around her, her confidence grew, and she has since produced her own radio programmes on youth enterprise, reproductive health and peace building.

Malusu’s work brings her closer to the people in her community. “It provides an opportunity for me to build relationships and serve as a role model for young women,” she says. As well as her involvement in radio, Malusu sits on the National Youth Council for Liberia YMCA. As part of her work she mentors young women helping them build their self-esteem, and make informed life decisions.

Some of them remind her of herself in earlier days. Malusu is committed to empowering young people and pursuing a career in journalism, and is currently in charge of 13 youth organisations across Liberia.

Malusu has come a long way, leaving the trauma of war behind her. She believes her involvement with the YMCA has shaped the dynamic youth leader she is today. “I have been transformed from a shy, quiet person. The YMCA has developed opportunities for young people, regardless of ethnic, sex, religious or social backgrounds and I am happy to be part of it.”
